How to Spot Fake Amethyst Geodes (Including Spheres):  While not often faked outright, it is quite common for lower quality amethyst geodes to be dyed to improve their appearance.  The easiest way to spot these is the base rock will have been painted (usually black) to help hide the dye lines.  Sellers will falsely claim that customers prefer them painted but this is simply not true.  No crystal enthusiast prefers painted crystals not to mention the paint starts to chip off quite quickly.
